When the mind games fail, it's time to quit.

Today's workout:
Sculpt 30 & Ab Ripper X
276 calories/47:18

Today's workout may also be known as:

One of the best pieces of advice I ever got about exercising when you don't feel like exercising is to commit to doing it for 10 minutes.  If after 10 minutes, you still don't feel like it, you can quit, and then you've at least done something.  I have used this little mental trick many times, and every single time, after ten minutes, I feel great and finish my workout.

If I had used this trick today, I would have done ten minutes and then eaten an entire pizza.

Do you ever have days where working out just feels terrible

Today was one of those days for me.  Cinderella opens in just over two weeks now, so I really wanted to push it this week, especially since last week got a little off because of the dumb cold I caught.  So last night as I was planning my day, I was all set to do my HIIT workout and my Sculpt workout and really go all out.  Then I woke up this morning.  I don't even know what it was, really - I didn't feel sick, I'd gotten plenty of sleep, I had a healthy breakfast.  But I knew right away that the HIIT workout wasn't even on the table, because just the thought of jumping up and down like that gave me a headache.  I got through the Sculpt workout, but I had to take several breaks and skip reps because my muscles got tired and achy so quickly.  I thought Ab Ripper X was going to make me pass out.

I'm proud of getting through what I got through, and I know in the long run, skipping the HIIT workout was the right thing to do and is not a big deal.  But I think once you're used to being able to get through tough workouts, not being able to get through them really does a number on you.  That being said... in the spirit of remaining positive, I am choosing to see today's workout as successful simply because I did it.  It may not have been the best I've ever done, but it was the best I had for the day, and I did it!

What do you do to overcome a bad workout?

The terrible, horrible, very bad, no good day of eating.

Today was one of those days... the kind of day where you wake up and despite the fact that the bananas are on the counter, the eggs are in the fridge and the whole grain toast is begging to be toasted, all you want is something greasy and fried.  I'm hoping I'm not the only one who has these days.  I have them regularly. Normally I try really hard not to give into them, but sometimes the opportunity presents itself, and you find your car driving to McDonald's to get an Egg McMuffin and hash browns.  I would be lying here if I said I was proud.

But we've all had those days where we don't make the right choice for breakfast... and what do we do?  We get right back on track with lunch!  Right?!  We definitely don't go to Chick-fil-A and devour waffle fries and Diet Dr. Pepper.  That wouldn't be a good decision at all.

Shockingly, around 3 or 4 pm, I started feeling relatively awful.  Now I'm definitely not Miss Eat Clean Queen on a daily basis, but when I joined Weight Watchers back in 2009, I cut my fast food habit way down.  Lately, though, it's kind of crept back into my life... and while I appreciate that with Weight Watchers, I can still have the food I love (read: food dripping in grease) in moderation, it doesn't mean I can handle it the way I used to.  Before my weight loss, I easily could have downed both those meals no problem.  Now... I struggle.  And I definitely struggled today.  I didn't have much energy, I felt incredibly lethargic, and I was cranky.  I was actually seriously considering blowing off exercise because just the thought of jumping up and down with another HIIT workout made me queasy.

So I let myself off the hook, but only by a little bit.  I decided that since I had fueled my body poorly all day, a HIIT workout might do more damage than good, and make me feel even more run down.  But I knew I had to do something, and was desperately hoping that a good sweat would make me feel better.  So I did Fire 30 and Stretch 40, and you know what?  It was glorious.  About ten minutes into Fire 30, I felt so much better, and Stretch 40 was exactly what I needed to wrap it all up.  I finished feeling like a brand new person.  And then I ate a banana and planned my healthy breakfast for tomorrow - huzzah!  Sometimes one workout really does make all the difference...

Weekly Recap!

I absolutely love Amylee's "Weekly RUNdown" that she posts on Mondays, so as usual, instead of thinking up my own clever ideas, I'm going to steal someone else's.  This might not happen every Monday, but since I was particularly lazy about actually writing about my workouts this week, I thought it might be nice to attempt to remember them!  Here goes...

Weekly Recap: December 12th - December 18th

Monday:  A much needed rest day after getting my 5K PR on Sunday!!

Tuesday:  My first fartlek run!  I ended up running for 35 minutes, or a total of 45 minutes if you include a 5 minute warm up walk and a 5 minute cool down walk, and I went 3.62 miles.  My average pace was 12:26, but since it was a fartlek, my pace was really all over the place.  I did feel a little bit like I favored sprinting, and wasn't including slightly longer bursts at a slightly slower than sprinting pace, so that is something I will work on!

Wednesday:  The beginning of Cinderella Boot Camp - yeehaw!  I did HIIT 20 and Ab Ripper X.  Both are really tough workouts, but if I'm going to be back in my skinny jeans (which, by the way, are a gorgeous pair of Joe's jeans that I found in a thrift store) by the time Cinderella opens, I need to get tough.  Especially because I did the math incorrectly (read: was a space cadet and got my days mixed up) and we actually open a week before I thought we did.  So my grand plan of 6 pounds in 6 weeks needs to be accelerated to 6 pounds in 5 weeks.  Possible?  I think so!

Thursday:  Thursdays are tempo days, and the plan was a 5 mile tempo run.  I finished 5.65 miles at an average pace of 12:08 (including walking to warm up and cool down).  It went well, though I struggled to maintain a good pace.  For training purposes, I'm trying to maintain a 10:15 pace for my running intervals during the tempo runs, but it was not happening in this run... I was either running at a 9:45 pace or a 10:30 pace.  I am glad this is not rocket science.

Friday:  Unplanned rest day because the day got away from me!  Too busy shopping for a ball gown for Cinderella to be bothered to exercise.  Sigh.  My life is super hard.

Saturday:  HIIT 25 and random ab work... meaning several of the moves from Ab Ripper X, but only 10 or so reps of each move instead of the 25 reps that Tony demands.  My abs were still slightly sore from Wednesday, so I thought taking it down a notch would be okay.  It was my first time trying HIIT 25, and I have to say, I didn't love it.  I'll give it another chance when I'm more prepared for it (I was stressed on Saturday, and not really feeling the whole exercise thing), but the combos were more complicated, and you're working hard enough that complicated is just frustrating.  I might have to work up to this one by doing HIIT 15 and HIIT 20 some more.

Sunday:  The long run for this week (which is week three of the FIRST training plan) was 10 miles.  I ended up cutting it a little short and doing 9.51 miles at an average pace of 12:29 (with warm up and cool down).  I wanted to complete all ten miles, but I got out the door a little later than planned and the sun went down while I was out running.  When I started the run, it was about 55 degrees and sunny outside, so I wore capris, a tech t-shirt, and sunglasses.  Like a moron.  Needless to say, when the sun went down, so did the temperature, and I was a struggling unit.  By the time I hit 9 miles, it was getting very cold and very dark, so I decided one mile would not make or break me and went home.  Overall, I was extremely happy with the way the run went - since the half marathon in October, the longest run I had done was 6 miles.  There were some tough parts of this run (miles 5 and 6 were mostly uphill and right when the temperature started to drop) but as a whole, it went incredibly well.  It did make me very tired though - I slept 10 hours last night!  Maybe for each mile I run, I need an hour of sleep...

Cinderella Boot Camp Day One

Today's workout:
HIIT 20 and Ab Ripper X
311 calories/38:00

Today I began what I am calling "Cinderella Boot Camp."  Cinderella opens in just over 6 weeks, and I want to look absolutely fabulous.  Prince Charming has been directed to stare longingly at me in amazement the minute he sees me, but I want everybody in that audience to drop their jaws and do the same thing.  Luckily, I have six weeks.  And, coincidentally, I am now 6 pounds away from the weight I was at when I finished P90X.  So if I can lose a pound a week for the next six weeks (which is totally doable if I avoid French fries at all costs), I can be back at my lowest adult weight for Cinderella.  Which would be GLORIOUS.  Thus... "Cinderella Boot Camp."  While the running three times a week thing will get me ready for the half marathon in February, it won't get me back into my skinny jeans... which I haven't actually worn in over a year.  I miss those jeans and I want to wear them when we go out after opening night.

My plan for the next six weeks is essentially to combine three different programs: my current half marathon plan, Turbo Fire, and P90X.  Obviously I can't do everything, and since I do want to be ready for that half marathon, the running is my top priority.  But part of the FIRST training plan is an emphasis on cross-training.  Personally, I'm not a swimmer or a cyclist - I can do both, but I'm not going to do it regularly, and even if it's the best cross-training for runners, if I don't do it, it doesn't help me.  So on the days I'm not running (right now I'm shooting for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays), I'll be doing a mixture of Turbo Fire and P90X.  I'm going to lean heavily on the HIIT workouts from TF, mostly because I think I've got my long cardio workouts covered with my running - better I get in some high intensity stuff and add some variety.  I'm hoping to do all three HIITs each week, using HIIT 15 and HIIT 20 as a warmup (HA!) for strength training, and HIIT 25 as more of a stand alone workout.  As for P90X, I'll be adding it in as I feel like it.  Today I chose to do Ab Ripper X because I've been completely neglecting my abs.  On Friday, I'm planning on doing Core Synergistics... more abs, but also some "functional fitness" style stuff, which I realize I haven't done in a while.

... bored yet?  I know.  But you're saving my parents and David from having to hear all of this, so I'm sure they would thank you personally right now if you actually read that and cared.

The 480 Workout that ended up being the 400...

Today's workout:
323 calories/35:00
+
Ab Ripper X
125 calories/17:35

I've been doing a lot of cleaning lately.  I hate cleaning.  I suck at it and it makes me super grumpy.  When I post things like this...

... I'm really not kidding.  I have way too much stuff.  I had way too much stuff back in high school, and then I left half of that stuff at home before I went to college, and probably tripled my amount of stuff through college.  And let's not even talk about the two semesters spent in Florida and my constant desire to blow my paychecks at the Orlando outlet malls.  Let's just say I have a whole lot of stuff.  And one of my goals for 2011 was to get rid of most of it.  Welp.  Here we are, halfway through November, and I've barely made a dent in the decluttering that needs to be done.  Thus... lots of cleaning lately.

I woke up this morning and cleaning sounded really gross just like it does every other day, so I decided to browse blogs instead for some new workout ideas.  I kept going back and forth about what I was going to do for workouts for a while... I stick with my routine much better when I have a goal in mind, or when I'm using some sort of "system."  That's a big part of why I love some of the Beachbody products, like P90X (and yes, I am completely twitterpated over P90X2) and TurboFire - they have set schedules, so I don't have to think about what workout I'm going to do that day.  If I'm given too much freedom and can just decide on a workout for the day, I will most likely choose lifting the fork to my mouth.  Specific plans for running have also helped me... I never would have started running without Couch to 5K and the half marathon training plan that I used, even though I ended up tweaking it, kept me on track.  But I've been in a bit of a limbo lately.  I'm a little burned out on TurboFire, so while I can see doing it as a supplemental workout, I don't want to start a whole new round of it.  Plus, I want to keep my running up, perhaps even training for another half.

That being said, I feel like this year has been all about cardio, and I'm really missing strength training... to the point that I considered doing another round of P90X.  I must be in serious deprivation if I miss TOny Horton.  Well... that, and I patently refuse to see this on my heart rate monitor ever again, even if I've got several runs logged on my Garmin:

Lately, I've been seeing more and more information about CrossFit and I admit that I've been intrigued.  At first, I thought CrossFit looked interesting, but way too hardcore and elite for me.  Then one of my running idols started doing it, and since I consider her to be an athletic but normal person, I started thinking maybe it was worth a shot.  The only thing that I continually struggle with, though, is the money.  I don't have the gear or space to do a lot of the workouts, but most of the "affiliates" that I've looked into are absurdly expensive... we're talking a minimum of $100 a month.  I love an intense workout, but paying someone $100 or more a month to watch me sweat a lot and weep openly seems a little ridiculous.

So I turned to another blogger that motivates me: the lovely Katie at Yes, I Want Cake (who is in such good shape she can have that cake).  Her blog was actually the first place I ever heard of CrossFit, and she's so hardcore that does it in her own garage.  Note to self: suck up to David a whole lot until he builds me my own hardcore CrossFit gym.  Anyway, between drooling over these waffles that she made and cooing at pictures of her adorable baby, I saw a mention of something called the 480 Workout.  So I checked it out.  And now my arms are making it very clear that they will never forgive me for this.

The workout seems simple enough - it's made of basic moves and through the workout, you build up the number of reps.  Easy, right?

This workout rocked me.  I'm glad I did it, and I hate to say it, but I actually enjoyed it.  My only complaint was that it was pretty tough on the wrists - lots of pushups and burpees, which tend to bother my wrists.  So it probably won't become a 3-times-a-week workout for me, but I think it will be fun to do every so often and see if I can improve my time.  I will have to throw out today's time though (which was actually 25:37, because I warmed up for 7 minutes and then cooled down until 35:00) because it wasn't until I was explaining the workout to David that I realized I'd completely skipped the second set of 10 reps of each exercise.  Oops.  So, actually, I did the 400 Workout today.  It was still super hard.  Damn.

I added Ab Ripper X on at the end because I felt like I needed some more ab work.  And obviously I missed Tony Horton's beautiful face.  I'd forgotten how evil that workout is.  I love it, though, and I'm thinking that unlike the 480 Workout, I really should bring Ab Ripper X back into a 3-times-a-week rotation.

I'm feeling pretty hardcore now, having completed that beast of a workout, even if I did leave 80 reps out (oops).  Maybe I'll even try some of the CrossFit workouts that don't require so much gear.  Or maybe I'll finally bite the bullet, buy myself a sandbag and an adorable pink GymBoss timer, and try to keep up with this girl.

Yeah, she and I are definitely on the same level... in the same place that we wear the same bra size.  My dreams.

Speak da Troof Sunday: It is completely mental.

Today's workout:
Fire 30
320 calories/31:46

Today was not my day.  I woke up this morning feeling like I'd been punched in the head.  I have no idea why because I definitely did not go out with one of my best friends last night, eat my weight in Chinese food, throw back two glasses of plum wine (HOW HAD I NOT HAD THAT GLORIOUS ELIXIR BEFORE?!) and stay up until 1 am.  None of that happened.  Neither did this.

We are so cool.

Regardless of the cause, it wasn't a pretty wake-up call.  I seriously considered just staying in bed, but I got moving and went to church with my mom, which turned out to be a wonderful mass about taking care of others.  Between auditions and Cinderella rehearsal, it has been a little bit "all eyes on me" lately, and I don't want it to go to my head too much... so I needed a little reminder that the world does not, in fact, revolve around me.

After church is where the real headache started.  See... sometimes I have cravings.  Okay, I constantly have cravings.  And sometimes they are for reasonable things like smoothies or big salads with lots of fresh veggies crammed in there.  And then sometimes they are for McDonald's breakfast items.  I know McDonald's is going to give me cancer and send me to an early grave.  I know.  But I can't help it if I think that they make delicious hotcakes and sausage!  And I was super duper hungry this morning... so I made a horrible choice.  I ordered something called a Deluxe Big Breakfast.

Feel free to judge me now.

I justified this choice by saying that I wouldn't eat all of this.  This is true - I didn't eat the biscuit because I didn't like it.  The rest of that happy little platter, on the other hand, was completely demolished.  And I tracked it (I'm tracking again because Cinderella can't have jiggly bits) so I felt okay about it.  Then I stood up and tried to go about my day.  An hour after I'd eaten all of that, I started to feel like I was maybe going to die.  And slowly but surely, I watched all of my good intentions for the day fall apart at the seams.  I had hoped to go for a run, but with that platter of lead in my stomach, I knew I'd be on the ground crying before I had gone half a mile.  Plus, it was cold out, and I felt like a pansy.

So what does all of this have to do with the vague title of "it is completely mental" up there?  As I sat on my couch, giving up on my exercise plans for the day, I got on Pinterest and started looking at the fitness section.  All of these wonderfully motivating and inspirational images and quotes started popping up, and I felt like maybe I could get through a workout.  So I went downstairs and powered through Fire 30.  I could have used the terrible eating choices as an excuse, or the cough that refuses to leave as an excuse... and honestly, both of them would have been valid.  I definitely had some cramping issues during the workout, which I can only assume were related to that ridiculous breakfast.  And I did have to take breaks to catch my breath so I wouldn't hack up a lung.  But you know what kept Grumpy Gills going?

I cried when I found this.  Seriously.  If she can run, I can get through a 30 minute workout.

So was it the easiest and most refreshing workout ever?  Not exactly.  It did feel great to be moving, but it wasn't easy.  It's never easy.  But it proved to me what a difference a simple change in my mindset can be.  Now if only I can keep that up to try this beast that I've got my eye on tomorrow...

Audition in T-minus 15 hours.

Today's workout (I know, it's a miracle!):
Fire 45 EZ
451 calories/45:26

This morning was super productive - I got up early, got my headshots and resumes organized and ready, had a relatively healthy breakfast, practiced my song for tomorrow several times, and then got a workout in, all before we were set to head over to Epcot for lunch.  And by lunch I mean a French Regional Lunch, which, as I have mentioned before, is really just a painful amount of food and wine.  The workout went very well - I kept everything low impact because my ankles have been giving me a little bit of trouble and I didn't want to aggravate them too much.  But I still got a great sweat in and felt wonderful!

Unfortunately, that was the end of the feeling wonderful.  Over the course of the afternoon, I developed a very angry sore throat.  It started out as just a little ick, and is now just throbbing.  I've downed about 4 liters of water throughout the day, along with several cups of tea, and a big cup of soup at dinner.  No dice.  One thing that has made a little bit of a temporary dent in the soreness, though, is a new type of lozenge that I tried - Thayer's Slippery Elm Lozenges.  To quote the lovely Janae (who was awesome today and ran the NY Marathon like Speedy Gonzales), those lozenges are thebomb.com.  Personally, I really dislike cough drops.  I can't stand the menthol ones and even the non-mentholated ones are only good for maybe a couple hours, and then I get so sick of the taste I give up completely.  But these slippery elm ones are delightful!  They're not as strong as something like Halls cough drops, but they have a very mild and sweet flavor... they actually remind me a little bit of oatmeal.  So if you're like me and can't stand cough drops, try these babies out next time you run into a sore throat.

Anyway, despite the slippery elm lovelies, I'm still struggling with my throat, and getting more and more nervous for my auditions.  I wish I could say that I'm surprised, but honestly, this kind of thing happens to me on a regular basis.  I am generally very healthy... until something important comes up that depends on my good health.  Then I fall to pieces.  Like two weeks ago when I was planning to start Insanity and I woke up feeling like someone had hit me with a truck.  I'm sure part of it is mental, but kids, it is annoying.

For much of this evening, I was struggling to keep my spirits up - I've put a lot of time and effort into these auditions and I was crushed when it occurred to me that something as stupid as a sore throat could prevent me from giving my absolute best performance.  There were some tears, I will admit.  But the audition is now officially a mere 15 hours away, and so I am trying instead to see this as an opportunity to do my absolute best despite the situation... to rise above and shine.  I have performed with a sore throat before, and I can do it tomorrow.  Or I can stop blogging and get some darn sleep and pray my little heart out that I wake up feeling better.

I like that one.  Let's try it!

I exercised! It's a miracle!

Today's workout:
Fire 30
A bunch of calories/30ish minutes (I wrote it down somewhere...)

That's right, kids.  I got up this morning and worked out.  First thing in the morning, before 7 am.  I was so excited to get back to doing TurboFire after the beating that was the first three Insanity workouts (I feel like a pansy just writing that), and you know what?  It kicked me right in the rear.  The same dizziness and nausea that I felt with Insanity started to come up about halfway through Fire 30, and it's not a long workout, so that's a bad sign.  Then I had two realizations:

1.  I tapered off doing anything but running in the week or so before the half, then ran it and promptly took two weeks off of exercise.  I think I did one TurboFire workout in the whole two weeks, and then I ran 3 easy miles.  Other than that, I took it easy and held off on the exercise.  So I lost two weeks of physical activity.

2.  This one I'd mentioned before and kind of joked about, but today it hit me that maybe this was really true.  I'd gotten used to doing TurboFire in my heavily air conditioned basement - when the air conditioning is on in this house, the basement turns into the arctic.  Sometimes I think I'll go down there and be able to see my breath.  But winter kind of snuck up on us this year, and now we're pumping the heat.  Meaning that I went from exercising at temperatures in the low 60s to exercising at temperatures in the high 70s.  I can't imagine why I feel dizzy and nauseous!

So I'm cutting myself a little bit of slack and scaling back a bit.  This week I'm going to try to focus on just getting something physical in every day - if I feel up to something hardcore like TurboFire, that's great.  But if not, then I'll do some yoga or take the Bonster Monster for a walk.  I'm hoping to start a hybrid program of TurboFire and P90X soon, but if I need to just gradually work on getting my fitness level back up for a couple weeks, then that's okay with me.

And you know what I'm sure will greatly help?  The disgusting amount of Halloween candy in my kitchen right now.

But seriously.  There is a stash of candy next to me right now.

In other news, I spent my morning finishing one big part of David's long awaited birthday surprise.  Which I've been torturing him about since May.  And which is now pretty much going to be a Hanukkah surprise because I took my sweet time on it.  Since D-Dawg reads this (hi David!), I can't tell you what it is, so I'll give you all the same hints I gave him - it involved fake eyelashes, a very long drive, a space heater, and a 13 week old corgi puppy named Bailey.  Who I almost kidnapped.  Any guesses?

And speaking of questions...

Did anyone do anything super fun for HALLOWEEN?  Tell me all about your costume!
I dressed as Minnie Mouse with my parents for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party when we were in Florida a couple weeks ago, and then on Friday, I was Snow White for my Weight Watchers meeting.  They loved it!

Speak da Troof Sunday: Stressed out Jessica is no fun

I was inspired to write this after reading SUAR's latest post - hers is a lot more serious, but it gave me a nice reminder that just because you blog about running and fitness doesn't mean that you have to avoid blogging about anything else in your life.  And since other parts of my life have been overshadowing any running and fitness, I thought maybe another speak da troof was in order.

This is not to say that I haven't been trying to blog.  I started a 15 Thing list on Friday, beginning with my decision to halt Insanity for a while and try it again at a different time.

Although I normally would agree with what the lovely Amylee (who just got a new half marathon PR, YOU GO GIRL!) said about needing to give something a while before you make a decision on it... after day 3 of Insanity, my decision was made.  No more Insanity for Jessica right now.  And I really do mean right now - I'm not throwing it in the garbage or selling it on Craigslist or anything.  It will stay in my workout DVD collection and I think the time will come that it will be the right thing for me to do and it'll be great.  But now is not that time.  Even just three days into it, I was dreading the workouts.  Honestly, they're not that much harder than TurboFire (my heart rate was about the same for the Insanity workouts and the TF workouts), but what TF has going for it that Insanity doesn't is fun.  TurboFire is super hard, but the music is awesome and you're too busy shaking your booty to notice.  There are no distractions in Insanity.  You know that your life sucks a little and that your muscles hate you.  It's a little stressful.  And I do not need stress from exercise right now, I need exercise as a release.  So I'm starting TurboFire again tomorrow, and will throw some running in when it works.

The reason I am trying to minimize added stress is because I've got a whole lot of it weighing on me right now.  But instead of hiding away and not blogging, I felt like it might help me to get it all down and out there.

About a week ago, I was checking the Disney Auditions website, which I do regularly, and two different auditions caught my eye.  The first is in Orlando on November 7th, and it's for an a capella group called Voices of Liberty that performs in Epcot.  I've heard them before, and they are an absolutely incredible ensemble that I've always wanted to audition for, but I'd never gotten the chance.  But my parents had already made plans to go back to Orlando in just a few days, so adding on some extra time so that I could do the audition seemed like a no-brainer.  The second audition, though, was even more exciting to me - it is scheduled for November 10th, and it's for two brand new a cappella groups that will be added to Disney's California Adventure next year.  The website describes them as follows: "Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airlines, a four-member charter airline crew that sings and swings to songs from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, and The Friendly Sisters, a talented trio from the Midwest who epitomize the innocent, optimistic “can-do” America of the 1920s."  They are looking for singers of all ranges and types, and the benefit of auditioning for a group that doesn't exist yet is that you're not trying to fill someone's shoes.  The problem?  The second audition is in Hollywood.  So now instead of going to Orlando for a few days just to relax and then come home, I'll be going to Orlando for a few days to relax, then do a big audition, then hopefully have callbacks the next day, then fly from Orlando to Burbank, do a big audition bright and early the next morning, and then probably cry a lot.  And I leave in four days.

It sounds silly, but these auditions are taking a serious toll on me.  These are big league auditions, much bigger than what I'm used to, and I know that.  So the first step for me was to get some headshots taken, because I really didn't have anything that was perfect.  Luckily, I was able to make arrangements with a photographer to get some headshots taken on Friday, and I have since chosen one and she is getting it retouched and sent off to the printers so I will have copies on Wednesday (fingers crossed).  But it's me, and I'm high maintenance, so it took hours for me to pick the right shot after she'd put them up on her website.  And then I asked for opinions from my parents and David, and sure enough, more hours spent changing my mind about which was the right shot!  I'm also completely unsure about what to sing for both auditions because they're not what I'm used to... for a specific musical, I'd sing something from a similar show, but for vocal groups that do a variety of things, it's a lot harder.

On top of the stress of actually getting ready for the auditions, I also have my responsibilities here hanging over me.  I feel terrible when I miss Friday mornings with my Weight Watchers members, because I've been in their shoes and I know how important it is to have your leader to depend on.  But doing these auditions means that I'll be missing two more meetings, and the guilt is overwhelming (before you ask - yes... I am Catholic).  And that's just the guilt I feel going to the auditions.  If either audition leads to an offer, everything changes.  I believe a position with Voices of Liberty would start immediately, meaning that I'd be quitting my job with Weight Watchers with very little warning and leaving the cast of Cinderella (which we FINALLY started rehearsing for and I will update more about later) with no Cinderella.  The Disneyland situation wouldn't be much better - those contracts start in January, which means that I could give Weight Watchers plenty of notice, but I would still have to leave Cinderella.  On the flip side, it would mean that I'd be moving out to California in January, which would mean the end of the long distance for David and I, and I'd be doing it with a great job already secured.  Not to mention the fact that I'd be getting paid to sing.  For Disney.

Regardless... that's what is hanging over my head right now and why Insanity is going to have to wait.  It does actually feel kind of nice to put it all out there and not keep it bottled up.  Hopefully everything works out the way it is supposed to... but I'm not sure what way that is right now!

Triple Tangent Twednesday (better late than never!)

First of all, WELCOME NEW FOLLOWERS!  I can't even begin to explain how exciting it was to get so many comments and watch my list of followers grow today.  I was checking my email and punching David in the arm all day.  I'm sure he was thrilled.

For those of who you are new, I feel the need to explain this post a little bit.  Originally, I stole the idea of Triple Tangent Tuesday from this beautiful blogger, but I failed at blogging on Tuesdays.  Tuesdays were dead to me, apparently.  So I started doing the tangents on Wednesday and calling it Triple Tangent Twednesday.  The end!  Now it's 11:57, so most likely this will end up being a Triple Tangent Thursday, but... we do what we can.

1.  My pretty, shiny bribe to trick myself into tracking my food for a week WORKED, kids.  I tracked for a full seven days, every single day, and I didn't even use all of my weekly allowance!  I love bribery, works like a charm.  Dangle something lovely in front of me and I'm so much more likely to get off my chubby parts and get moving.  I now have my Tervis tumbler!

We are pretty much inseparable already.  I feel like this is going to cause worse relationship problems than the time I told David I was leaving him for a buttermilk biscuit.  And yes, that really happened... in my defense, it was a damn good biscuit.

2.  I got up this morning, immediately got into my workout clothes, and did some Turbo Fire.  I was happily surprised to notice that my legs were actually doing pretty well - I kept a lot of the moves low impact just to be safe, but squats didn't make me cry nearly as much as I thought they would.  What did hurt more than I expected was the fact that my sweat was made of pure sugar and was really pissed to be coming out of my pores.

Oh, did I forget to mention the box of donuts that happened post-race on Sunday?  I might need to make a part four of the race recap, entitled "Freezing to Death, Naps Formerly Known as Comas, and Jessica vs. The Donut Box."

3.  David is in town (hooray!) which means lots of eating out... which means that I spent most of today in complete denial of the fact that I need to fit into my pants.  Take, for example, my breakfast, which I am not so proud to tell you I polished off without thinking twice.

In case you're wondering, that is not the biscuit that I threatened to leave David for.

But despite all of my pants fitting denial, even I couldn't finish everything at dinner, and so a miraculous thing happened that David insisted I share with all of you.

That's right, kids.  We have leftovers.  As you can see from David's bewildered face, we aren't really sure what to do with them, since we encounter them so rarely.  We think leftovers are for people who haven't learned to unbutton their pants in public yet.

But shockingly, after eating my weight in food all day, I'm not feeling super delightful.  So I've already chosen where David and I will be going to breakfast tomorrow morning.  It's one of his favorites, so I got called "the most perfect girlfriend ever" for suggesting it.  Really, I just need a place that will serve me oatmeal so that I can show my face at work tomorrow... but hey, I'll take the whole perfect girlfriend thing.  That's a solid bonus.

A bunch of random things!

I know it's not Triple Tangent Twednesday or 15 Thing Friday, but a list seemed easier to write than actual paragraphs.  Paragraphs feel like work.  And we all know how I feel about work.

1.  I have now tracked and stayed within my daily points target for three whole days!  Despite this not sounding super impressive, it's a big deal for me lately, so I'm thrilled.  I even went to Wendy's today for lunch (a combination of poor planning, intense craving, and the desire to chew my own arm off I was so hungry) but instead of just ordering blindly, I looked stuff up on my phone with the WW app and made reasonable choices.  And when I got hungry later, I made an apple peanut butter sandwich!  Healthy!

Three days down, four to go.  My Tervis tumbler is so close I can hardly stand it.

2.  I am going crazy deciding what to wear for the half marathon.  And by "going crazy" I absolutely mean "driving everyone else crazy because I won't shut up about it."  No kidding, as I type this, I have six tabs open on my browser devoted to things I may or may not want to buy to wear for the half marathon.  Most of them far more expensive than I should even be considering.  Where is a sugar daddy when you need one?!

3.  What are not being considered at all, and instead just being purchased despite the painful price tag, are these bad boys.  I forced myself to do my two Turbo Fire workouts today and the whole time, my hips and knees were pissy.  I've looked at compression tights before and always deemed them too expensive, but then I read this on the CW-X website: "The patented CW-X Support Web provides targeted support to the knee, IT band and hip flexor areas for greater stability and improved performance."  Support for the knees and hip flexors?  Um... yes?  I don't care if you cost as much as I make in a week... which is more a testament to my terrible wages than your price, really.  If you can make my legs hate me just a little bit less, you are worth every cent.  I was torn between getting the CW-X and the Zensah capris, mostly because I think Zensah is kind of circulating the blog world and everything keeps getting rave reviews.  But the CW-X has more rave reviews, and I can get them for a little bit cheaper on Road Runner.  Every little bit counts for those of us poor people with expensive tastes.

4.  Oh wait, that's it.  That's all my brain has left.  So... um... here's me flirting with Dale.

Taking a cue from one of my favorite bloggers...

I am starting Operation Suck Less in honor of Suck Less, Whine More.  But I can't add more whining to my regimen because, as you know if you read my last post, I am already in tip top whining shape.

And where, exactly, has all my whining gotten me?  Oh, that's right... crying in bed yesterday after running 3.66 miles when I was planning on running 9 miles.  Really?  I still ran 3.66 miles!  Six months ago, I was not running 3.66 miles.  Running a mile seemed a little challenging.  I have come a long way!  So what if I didn't run 9 miles - I ran 11 miles last week!  And not in the course of the week, but all in one day!  At one time!  I couldn't have done that even three months ago.  Three years ago, I couldn't even run without getting horribly out of breath after only a few seconds.  I let myself get emotional yesterday, and while it wasn't the best response, I'm not going to beat myself up about it, because it's okay.  Everything's okay.  I'm alive.  I'm healthy (as long as you don't count the fact that my bloodstream is currently 90% candy orange slices).   And I regularly get punched in the arm (in a good way) by an amazing blogging community filled with motivating people like Amylee (who is, in case you didn't know, gorgeous... on top of being a running rockstar and finishing the Top of Utah Marathon AND qualifying for Boston!).  So am I giving up like I whined about yesterday?

Hell no, I'm not!

Instead, I am going to start sucking less.  For me, this means the following:

  1. Stop beating yourself up for not constantly being God's gift to exercise.  Miss a workout?  Life goes on.  Ran 1 mile instead of 10?  It'll be okay.
  2. Don't allow rule #1 to turn into "I don't feel like running 10 miles, so I'll do 2 crunches instead and then take a nap."  While beating yourself up is no longer required, effort is still required.  You don't feel like doing a HIIT workout today?  Too bad.  You are required to at least attempt it.  If you start and you are in pain or feel awful, that's one thing, but no skipping workouts just because you don't feel like getting sweaty or you'd rather eat Chick-fil-a.
  3. Listen to your body.  When your knees hurt, ice them and stop jumping around like a maniac trying to impress Chalene Johnson.  When you're tired, rest.  When you are thirsty, have some water.  When you are hungry, don't listen to the voice that tells you to buy Oreos.  Eat a freaking banana.
  4. Floss.  Seriously.
  5. And, perhaps most importantly given yesterday's emo kid post... FINALLY REGISTER FOR AND RUN THE ROCK 'N ROLL DENVER HALF MARATHON.

I know.  I needed to do this a while ago.  And I can cough up a million excuses for why I didn't, but let's be honest... when you get right down to it, I'd say it was 50% fear and 50% laziness.  Neither of which should be part of my running.  So I am shutting up and registering.  And I have a backup bribe in case I start to chicken out - after I register, I get to pick out a new outfit for race day.  I will absolutely finish registration if I know there's shopping at the end.  It's kind of the best way to bribe me into anything.

So that's it.  Operation Suck Less... commence!

Guess who didn't run 9 miles today?!

Don't get too excited, kid... You're still doing it tomorrow.

Today's workouts:
Sculpt 30
HIIT 15

Due to many factors (and no, laziness was not one of them, but I can't blame you for guessing) I decided to do my long run tomorrow and just attempt fitness today.  I'm backing up a little bit and restarting the last 30 days of Turbo Fire because, let's face it, I haven't exactly done well with it and I'd rather not look worse in my "after" pictures than I did in the horrendous "before" pictures.  This means that I'll be in the middle of the hardest TF week when I run the half, but... we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

I wish I could say that jumping back into Turbo Fire was super easy and went incredibly well.  But everyone keeps telling me that lying is a sin.  So instead I'll be honest and say that I had nothing to eat pre-workout except for orange slices.  And I don't mean orange slices like the fruit.

But I cranked the air conditioning in the hotel room and got through it.  Sculpt 30 was a beast... HIIT 15 was worse.  I kind of thought I was going to throw up.  I also thought that during all the jumps at the end of HIIT 15 I was going to fall through the floor.  I'm sure the people in the room below us were thrilled with my existence.

Now it's time to force myself to sleep so that I can get up and run tomorrow.  Best of luck to me.

T is for Tuesday. And TOXIC.

Today's run:
Half Marathon Training Week 12, Day 1 (30 minute easy run)
2.78 miles/40:00

Today's second workout because I thought I could hack it:
Sculpt 30
183 calories/28:17

Those were the two workouts that I did today before I realized that my body was going to descend into darkness.  I don't have a lot to say except that I feel like death.  I have all fingers and toes crossed that I don't actually have some vile disease because I really want to be able to fly to California on Friday to see David.  And I already have enough issues with flying alone and at night, so flying alone and at night and fighting the flu is so not happening.  Which means no David... no Disneyland... no Dole Whip.  Inappropriate.

If you are reading this, please send healthy thoughts my way.  I feel a little like I did on the second day of Percocet with my wisdom teeth... right before I spent several hours with my head in a toilet crying to my mom that I was not going to make it through the night.  Let's not hit that point again, shall we?

Long runs take away my will to live.

Okay... that's a little dramatic.  But they do take away my will to blog.  So... that explains yesterday's silence.

Yesterday's run:
Half Marathon Training Week 11, Day 3 (9 mile run)
9.48 miles/2:00:00

Today's workout:
Fire 45 EZ and Stretch 10
423 calories/44:53

The long run actually went incredibly well and I was thrilled!  I was so scared that it was going to be like last week's hell run, but no!  It was great!  I think one of the biggest things was that I did finally settle on a Camelbak and took it out for this run...

The Camelbak is now my new best friend.  Annadel will be my life partner... sorry, David.  I honestly believe that having the extra water (and straight water, as opposed to Cytomax) made all the difference in the world.  I felt better throughout the whole run, I was never thirsty, and I didn't finish and immediately call my mom begging for ice water.  I was afraid it was going to chafe like crazy and it didn't.  I was afraid it was going to bounce all over the place and it didn't.  I was afraid the sound of the water sloshing would bug me (lots of reviews complained about that) and it didn't (partially because I had music blaring in my ears).  My only complaint was that it seemed to be leaking slightly... but honestly, it just made my lower back a little damp which helped keep me cool, and there was plenty of water.  I drank to my little heart's content and still had water left in the reservoir (I refuse to call it a bladder because that's freaking weird) when I got home, which means that it should be absolutely perfect for the half marathon.  Really.  This thing is my bestie.

I tried to maintain around an 11:00 or 11:30 pace for my running intervals, which I did pretty darn well at, especially given all the stupid hills I ran up.  Including my walking intervals, my average pace was about 12:39, which is only a bit higher than the average pace of my tempo runs.  That kind of kicks ass.  That means that an average pace of 13:00 would be totally feasible for my first half, which would mean finishing in under 3 hours.  That's all I want!  I'd be thrilled with a sub 2:45, but that might be something to shoot for with my second or third half.  Really, my only goal is to finish standing, but under 3 hours would really be delightful.

Alas... as great as the run was, the aftermath was not so great.  I rushed through stretching and skipped icing so that I could go to church, which I think eventually bit me in the ass.  I took in plenty of calories (cough bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit cough) and let myself rest.  And by rest I mean lay in bed and catch up on blog reading.  I definitely did take awkward pictures in case you were wondering.  It looked like this:

Actually, it was more like this...

Until I got hungry and grumpy, and then it looked like bitch face here.

But even with stretching (I did do quite a bit before church) and lots of carbs and plenty of rest... in the afternoon, I crashed.  I crashed hard.  And I turned into this weepy, emotional wreck who couldn't face blogging because she was too busy crying to her boyfriend about how she didn't want to watch football when she got to LA.  To be fair, I really don't like football... but I don't think it was worth crying over.  I mean, unless you use "I ran 9 miles this morning" as an excuse for everything, including irrational behavior.  Which, I do.  Thank goodness.

And so, I went to bed and skipped other stuff like blogging and being a tolerable human being.  Forgive me.  I was weepy, though, so if I had blogged, it probably just would have been a sad poem.  Consider yourselves spared.

When I got up this morning and still wanted to chop my own hips off, I thought TurboFire was definitely going to kill me.  But I did it!  I got through it!  I did make pretty much everything low impact, but when I compared my stats from today's workout to other times I've done Fire 45 EZ, I realized that by doing everything low impact and taking it easy on my joints, I'd only burned about 40 fewer calories than when I take it high impact.  Seriously?  Forty calories?  What is that, two cups of lettuce?  Stupid.

I'm actually posting before 11 pm.

It's a miracle!  Now I just have to hurry up and finish this nonsense so that I can go to sleepy time before I get grumpy pants.

See the bottom cat?  The one who looks like he's going to throw down?  That will be me if I'm not in the fetal position and drooling on my pillow by 10 pm tonight.

Today's run:
Half Marathon Training Week Nine, Day Two (30 minute tempo run)
3.18 miles/40:00

Not a bad tempo run... I didn't get as far as I did with David on our anniversary run, but I also didn't feel like crying at the end, so I'll take it.  Some day I will not want to die when I'm running the hills in my neighborhood.  Today was not that day.  I tried to avoid them as best as I could, but it's inevitable - the last couple intervals are always uphill unless I want to just run farther away from my house and then have to walk back wheezing and sweaty and begging for ice water.  But I tried not to beat myself up for going slower when I was doing the hills, and sometimes that's all I can do.  The 8:45 min/mile pace didn't happen for me today (though the Garmin says my best pace was 8:12 which I find hard to believe) but I did try to keep the running around 9:30 to 10:30, which felt pretty good.  I was able to do the second mile in 11:04, which is kind of outstanding considering that included my walk intervals.  I've been debating lately about trying to do a 5K without the intervals, just constant running, but I think my pace is actually better with the intervals.  I know it's mostly mental, but facing 30 to 40 minutes of just straight running sounds unbearable to me.  I have to be able to tell myself I only have to run for one more minute.  Maybe I chose the wrong activity...

But then again, I haven't exactly been rocking the Turbo Fire thing lately... I didn't do either of the TF workouts that were scheduled for me today.  I'm using the excuse of "I got 6 hours of sleep and already did a tempo run," even if the tempo run was only for three miles.  Don't judge.

In other news, I worked more than 2 hours today and it was downright strenuous.  I'm flying back to Florida this weekend to work a few seasonal shifts and I'm not sure how I'm going to make it through eight hours of productivity.  David, if you're reading this, please become a rich and famous writer tomorrow so that I only have to work to support my shopping habit.  Though... with my shopping habit, I'd probably be working 80 hour weeks.  Rude.
