Short runs are my new crack.

Today's run:
Half Marathon Training Week 11, Day 1 (30 minute easy run)
2.8 miles/40:00

I am learning to really love my short runs.  I walk for 5 minutes, run for 15 minutes and then it's already time to start making my way back home.  You just can't beat looking down at the Garmin, seeing "20:00" and knowing you're halfway through!  Way better than seeing "1:00:00" and knowing you're still going.  I guess that shows how far I've come though - sometimes, it was all I could do to get through those 30 minutes of Couch to 5K.  Now here I am!  So that's pretty awesome.

In other awesome news, I took advantage of Borders going out of business today.  Sorry, Borders - maybe if you hadn't seriously jacked up your prices, you'd still be in business.  But I don't mind, because it made for reasonable prices!  And thus, this happened...

Disregard that it's backwards... thanks PhotoBooth.  That is Frasier: The Complete Second Season, and I got it for $10 less than Amazon has it for!  And yes, I know I am lame.  I also picked up a couple more goodies, like Runner's World: The Runner's Body, which I've read a few pages of now and find super interesting... as well as this gem...

Oh, kids... I believe I will be taking before and after pictures of me reading this book, because I think it will go from mascara on my eyelashes to mascara dripping down my face pretty quickly.  It's a book about a blind cat.  Teaching a woman to love.  Seriously?  It's like Gwen Cooper got in my brain and found the exact specifications for an all-out cryfest.  I don't know if I've mentioned this on this blog before, but I love cats.  I mean... I really love cats.  To the point that I understand how this girl feels...

Which isn't half as entertaining as the Songify version...

You're welcome.

Well, that was random.  But I couldn't let you go on living without hearing "Can't Hug Every Cat," could I?  Especially since I've watched it about 8000 times just this week, so... someone has to understand me.  But speaking of random...

How did that Mexican pig cookie get into my hand?!  I guess if it's here, I have to eat it.  Sad day.

Slacker, party of one, your table is now ready.

I kind of can't believe that I haven't updated in an entire week... but this week has been absolutely nuts.  You can pretty much blame three things for my absence.

plus...

and who can forget...

All super awesome things... okay, maybe working a ton wasn't all that awesome, but having money is splendid.  But I can't believe I left my blog hanging, especially since I FINISHED COUCH TO 5K THIS WEEK!!  And it was splendid.  But I will post more on that later, because right now I want to hang out with my Pops and celebrate Father's Day, and then I need to pack because I leave tomorrow morning for this...

So that I can see this...

and do a whole lot more of this!

Luckily, D-Money has insisted that I blog regularly while in California... mostly because he wants to read them.  So the fact that he can't get enough of me works in your favor.  And mine :)

A new, adorable addition to my family.

Today's run:
Couch to 5K Week Nine, Day One (LAST WEEK!)
3.0 miles/42:12

Today was not my greatest run of all time, but that's okay.  I went out on the trail, and it was super sunny and pretty darn warm when I went out, even though it was pretty early (about 8:30).  Plus, all I had was a banana and a few sips of Cytomax before I started running, so I think I crashed a little because of lack of sustenance.  But it wasn't a horrible run, and I got through it, so I'm proud!

I'm completely exhausted and planning on passing out very soon, but I wanted to give a little photo update of my weekend since it was a HUGE adventure.

Glorious smoothie-in-a-bowl refreshment on Saturday morning.

Rockies game this afternoon with my whole family, complete with pictures taken with my awesome new hipster-y photo app.  Sorry for not making my dad squish in there with us... he was crazy and wanted to, you know, actually watch the game.  Weird.

And then... the most exciting part of the whole weekend... bringing home this gorgeous girl.

More on that to come, I promise!  For now, it is bedtime.  Well... maybe ice cream sandwich and then bedtime.  A big weekend deserves a little something!

Running makes me bipolar.

Today's run:
Couch to 5K Week Eight, Day Three (I'M ALMOST DONE!)
2.85 miles/38:17

So... remember two days ago when I was whining about how it was too hot and my run sucked?  I know, it's hard to keep my whining straight... bear with me.  Apparently the universe decided to smile on me, and made today cool, cloudy, and rainy.  Obviously this meant that I had an awesome run.  Seriously.  AWESOME.  Easily one of the best runs I've ever had in my life.  When I left for my run, I was a little lethargic and kind of had the attitude of "it doesn't matter if it's misting a little, you HAVE to go on your run now because otherwise you're never going to do it... suck it up, princess."  And when I came back, I was bouncing off the wall, full of endorphins, and ecstatic.  I wish I could bottle that feeling.

Yes, under that frizzy curly mess is me.  You thought I had naturally straight hair, didn't you?  No, no... I was luring you into a false sense of security during our honeymoon phase together.  Now the frizz comes out, kids.

I think the highlight of the run was actually the last few minutes.  I know, that sounds a little weird coming from someone who struggles with pacing, but I actually did a fabulous job with pacing today.  I ran in my hatefully hilly neighborhood for the first time in about a month, and honestly, it was so rewarding to realize that the hills that used to kill me were less challenging.  I did a whole three minute running interval up one of those long hills, and I kept a 12 minute mile pace or under the whole time!  And afterwards, I gave myself a slightly longer walk break (a minute and 20 seconds instead of just a minute) and kept on going.

Because of my pacing, I was able to just push through the last 5 or so minutes of the run and end feeling wonderful.  I actually really entertained myself using some positive visualizations (doubt not, unsure ones).  As I came up to a stop sign near the end, I figured I had about two minutes left.  I told myself that when I turned at the stop sign, I would be facing the finish line of the Disneyland half marathon (one of my dream races).  As it turns out, I had about 4 minutes left, and so what started as a simple visualization to keep me energized turned into an extravaganza.  Here, I give you a glimpse into my mind...

Jessica's brain:  Okay, you can see the finish line... you're so close!  You can get there!  (looks at Garmin)  You're almost there... look!  There are Mickey and Minnie waving you in!  And Donald and Goofy!  Even Stitch is there!  (looks at Garmin)  Oh, look, there's your family!  Mom is crying with pride, Dad and Lauren are cheering... and there's David!  And what does he have?  A DIAMOND NECKLACE?!  But you have to cross the finish line to get it, and you're getting closer every second!  (looks at Garmin, wonders why legs are still running)  Now there is a Cast Member from every land, and they all have something in their hands... it's a Fastpass!  Wait, it's multiple Fastpasses!  IT'S A FASTPASS FOR EVERY SINGLE RIDE IN DISNEYLAND!  And they're yours as long as you cross that finish line!  But wait, what's that sound?  They're starting Wishes in the middle of the day, just for you!  But why?  (looks at Garmin, getting slightly desperate)  Wait, where is everyone else?  Oh snap... YOU'RE WINNING THE DISNEYLAND HALF MARATHON!

That was it, more or less.  And I'm honestly not making any of that up right now.  That all came into my tiny, endorphin filled brain as I looked at my Garmin and wondered if time was standing still.  But I'll tell you, it was amazing.  I officially love visualizations.  I would be lying if I said I didn't throw my hands up in the air several times during this whole thing and yell "I'M WINNING!  I'M WINNING!"  I'm sure my neighbors think I'm special.  But I don't care because I'm the prettiest princess and I won the Disneyland half marathon today.

... seriously.  The endorphins.  See what they do to me?

I'm having hot flashes.

Today's run:
Couch to 5K Week Eight, Day Two
2.86 miles/41:10

Remember when I was whining endlessly about how cold it was in Colorado?  I must have angered the gods because suddenly, it's a million degrees outside.  Hello summer!  What happened to your old friend spring?!  I got up this morning around 8:30 and thought I'd be fine.  I was incorrect.  It was already too hot for my pansy self, but I had some breakfast and got out the door by 9:30.  Let's be honest... my run was this all over again...

Only much sweatier.

I have a renewed respect for all the runners of the world who deal with insane temperatures, like this awesome girl, or... you know... the Kenyans.  And on top of it being a wee bit too hot for my taste, I also rushed out for the run way too quickly after breakfast, and thought I was going to have some serious issues partway through.  But that's enough whining.  I did it, I burned some calories and got some sunshine, and now I can relax in the air conditioning for a while.  Aaaaaaand... it helped that I immediately Googled "bad run" and read several articles about how every runner has bad days.  I'd be so depressed without the Internet.

On a completely different note, I was reading SkinnyRunner's latest post this morning, and was intrigued.  I definitely have an "everything is so amazing!" Facebook friend, who generally makes me ballistic with her status updates.  Don't get me wrong, I love seeing happy Facebook updates, happy blog entries, and happy people... but do you have to be happy all the time?!

I think I fall pretty much on the other side of the spectrum with this blog.  I mean... you've seen the pictures I post of myself...

It ain't pretty, kids.

But I never want to be the Debbie Downer.  I might whine about my workouts sometimes (erm... nearly every day), but I'm still grateful for them.  And at the end of the day, even if my run sucked and I handle heat about as well as a polar bear, I have a great family, great friends, the most supportive boyfriend ever-of-all-time, and enough nail polish to keep me happy for eternity.

What do you think?  Would you rather interact with someone who reveals the good with the bad or a person who always sees everything through rose colored glasses?
I mean... if you're reading this... you clearly are okay with reading about my inability to wash my hair and resist Oreos, so you must be okay with mere mortals.

And speaking of my inability to wash things... while I am seriously loving the Mission skincare line, how the heck do you wash this stuff off?!!  I just spent a good half hour in the shower trying to get all of this sunscreen off my face, and my face is still sticky.  Also, I think I just found more of it behind my ears.

So who wants to hang out with me today?!

It's alive! It's... ALIVE!

Frankenstein?  Maybe?  Kind of?  Okay, so I stop blogging for a few days and suddenly can't come up with any good titles.  Forgive me.  But I'm still alive!  And I felt like a really bad blogger for not posting anything for a few days and taking no nasty sweaty pictures of myself...

This is me feeling bad.  This is also a nasty picture, just not sweaty.  So it's part of the equation.  You're welcome.

But today, after feeling bad about myself all freaking day (more on that later) and thinking I was a blogging failure, I told myself to suck it up and POST SOMETHING ALREADY.

So here I am.  And yes, that is the color that my iSight camera currently thinks I am.  I'm a pretty girl.

So, catching up...
Saturday's run:
Couch to 5K Week Eight, Day One
3.0 miles/42:38

Today's workout:
Bob Harper fail and P90X Shoulders and Arms
494 calories/1:16:21

Saturday's run was another great trail run.  Not a whole lot to say about it - felt great to be outside, and I got out when it was still pretty cool out.  Apparently I'm just a trail runner - looking back on the last few weeks, all the runs that I felt great about were on the trail, and all the runs I felt iffy about were on a path near my house.  So now I'm looking into more trails to run, and possibly even some trail races.  Maybe I should get some trail running shoes?  You know I love a good excuse to buy shoes.

Today's workout was kind of an adventure.  As you know if you've been following my tirades about cross training, I'm kind of stumped on strength training.  I did P90X last summer and loved it, but since I want to focus on training for a half marathon for the next few months, I don't want to restart P90X completely and overtrain.  Plus, I felt I needed a break from it.  So I've been searching for alternatives, and thought I had struck gold when I came across Bob Harper's Pure Burn Super Strength.

With 85 reviews and an overall rating of 4.5 stars on Amazon, I thought this was a great idea.  It's advertised as an hour long full body strength routine, and people LOVE IT.  The Amazon reviews regularly say that it's a tough, but great workout, that it delivers great results, that Bob Harper is awesome... the reviews that won me over were from people who had done P90X and said that this workout was better and harder.

These people were all either lying through their teeth or total morons.

I hate this workout.  I got through 15 minutes of it before I was so irritated that I turned it off, apologized profusely for ever doubting P90X, and fell back into the supportive, rippling arms of this man.

You know the Bob Harper workout is annoying if I immediately saw Tony-loudmouth-Horton as refreshing.

Seriously.  Don't buy that Bob Harper workout.  And if you do want to buy it, buy it off of me.  Please.  Because I spent $15 on it at Barnes and Noble, and since I made the mistake of opening it, now I'm stuck with trying to peddle it on eBay.  I don't know why it got so many great reviews.  It's a chaotic workout - he gives you zero time to change weights, and maybe I'm just weird, but I like a different weight for squats, bicep curls, and shoulder presses.  My manly legs can handle more weight than my girly biceps.  But you don't have a spare second to change weights.  And good heavens, the editing of this thing!  If it was going for an Oscar, it might have a chance, but as a workout, it's crazy.  No joke, less than 15 minutes in, one of the girls on the side is grunting and grimacing, and they keep doing freeze frame shots of her scary faces in black and white.  I haven't seen overacting that bad since Tom Cruise went crazy on Oprah's couch.

But I digress.  So I did the P90X workout.  And felt like I was kind of going through the motions.  I burned about 400 calories, so it's not like I was wasting my time, I'm just kind of looking for something new.

Which leads me to my question for the day:

Has anybody tried BodyRock?  Love it?  Hate it?  Indifferent?
I've seen her videos on YouTube before and came across the website this weekend for some reason and I'm intrigued.  I mean, who wouldn't be, look at that girl!  She's crazy hot!  I'd be okay with looking like that in a bikini, let's be honest.

Remember to tune in tomorrow for Triple Tangent Tuesday!  And I've still got a post I'm working on about the scale, which I plan on getting up tomorrow... I was newly inspired to finish it after reading this post from Cely at Running Off the Reese's.

Sleep tight, fellow bloggers!

I did a 5K today!

Today's run:
Couch to 5K Week Seven, Day Three
3.16 miles/45:24

Okay, so it wasn't a race or anything... just me and my beloved Garmin.  But hey, I did a 5K!  Pretty exciting stuff.  Today's run was actually pretty lovely.  I got out earlier, which was good because not only did the wind kick up like crazy, but it got into the 90s today.  Gross.  I left Florida for a reason, universe... please remember that.

Anyway, I went out when it was still pretty cool outside, and when that intense wind was just a really refreshing breeze.  It did get pretty toasty by the end of the run, but just enough to give me a good sweat, which felt really wonderful today.  I did more walk-run-walk intervals, but spaced them out more today - for most of it, I ran for 4 minutes and then walked for one.  I had a lot of good energy today, so this really worked for me.  And the mantra for the day?  "What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger."  Not something I really say or think about often, but it came into my head and gave me a good push.  At one point, it kept me going up a very steep hill, so I was proud of that!

The reason for the extended mileage was that by the time I got back home at the end of the run, the Garmin said I had gone 2.94 miles.  And I thought to myself, "Well, that's dumb... it's a beautiful day and it feels great to be outside, why not make it a 5K?"  And it was a beautiful day and it did feel great to be outside, so I'm glad I did it.

Of course, then I went to Red Robin and ate a bacon cheeseburger, so I was glad to have burned the extra 20 calories.  I know they really made a dent in that lunch.

On a completely unrelated note, I'm working on a couple different blog entries that I swear I will have up soon - one speak da troof that is weight loss/weight maintenance related and one all about cross training. Whew!  I can hear all that excitement brewing.  Somewhere David just yawned and wondered why he dates someone who can walk into a running shoe store and immediately give descriptions of every Asics shoe in the joint.  And before you think I'm kidding, I did that today to my poor unsuspecting friend, Ross.  He thought he was just having lunch today.  Ha!  I showed him.

But that's about it for me.  I apologize for not having nasty sweaty pictures of myself for the day... for once I actually took a shower immediately after exercising!  I know, it's shocking.  I bet a few of you nearly choked reading that.  Forgive me.  But I realized that I hadn't actually washed my hair in almost a week, and that maybe that would be a nice gesture if I was going out in public.  With clean people.

So instead, I will leave you with a few pictures to show off that I actually washed my hair today.  I did take off all my makeup and put on my rockin' glasses pre-photo shoot though, so rest assured that my lazy tendencies are intact and safe.

See?  See?  It's CLEAN!

Sending out a little love to all my fellow bloggers tonight.  You guys rock.

And then it was summer...

Today's run:
Couch to 5K Week Seven, Day Two

Aaaaand... that's about all the information I have for today's run.  Remember how last Thursday, I posted this entry about how great and philosophical my run was, and how I ended it feeling refreshed and renewed and proud of myself?  Take the opposite of that, add in some of this...

... and you have my run for the day.

My Garmin died about 10 minutes into the run, and since I was using my iPod shuffle and the Couch to 5K podcast, I really had no sense of time.  Normally, this would be no big deal, but it meant that I was flying solo in terms of walk breaks.  I decided to just "take them as needed," but let's be honest... I'm lazy and I let myself out of stuff too easily.  So I think I took an excessive amount of walk breaks and made them longer than they should have been.  I'm actually starting to worry a little bit about the walk breaks.  For one thing, I'm still working on getting over my mental block of "If I'm not running the whole time, how can I call myself a runner?!!!"  And for another, I'm starting to think I am letting myself off the hook with the walk breaks and that I could easily push myself to just run for the whole time straight... after all, I finished Couch to 5K as written back in 2009 when I was much heavier and much more out of shape.

On top of all the mental games I was torturing myself with during the run, Colorado apparently decided overnight that it was time for summer.  So when I went out for a run at 10:30 am expecting to be perfectly fine, I ended up getting pretty overheated.  Note to self: stop being a complete bum in the morning and go for your run earlier.

But after all is said and done, it was just one run, and life as we know it did not come to a crashing halt.  So I guess when I turn into a big whiny baby and cry about how the world will end if I have a bad workout or (gasp!) miss a workout entirely, I am wrong.  Now I know how poor Harold Camping must feel.

So I'm getting over it.  I'll do better tomorrow.  I know I just have to keep on keeping on, and I don't know why I am struggling so much to just do it.  After all, by the 10th of June, I have to send my weight into my manager for the month, and as of now, I'm still two pounds too heavy.  So what do I do?  Have a crappy run, whine about it while sitting on the couch, and then eat my weight in fajitas for dinner.  Nice work, Jessica.

Does anyone else have mildly self destructive behavior?  Why is it that even when we know what's good for us, we won't do it?
I sometimes think I regress into a teenager and have to rebel against something for no good reason.  So when I think about how I need to buckle down, exercise hard, and eat right to get my weight back under control (and, more importantly, back to a place where I'm comfortable and happy in my own skin)... I don't do it.  I kick and scream and eat cake.  Please someone tell me I'm not the only one who does this.

I just earned me some Beau Jo's, darnit.

Today's run:
Couch to 5K Week Seven, Day One
2.57 miles/34:10

This is just a quickie because I have a lunch date with my handsome feller at one of my favorite addictions in the world: Beau Jo's.  If you don't live in Colorado, I'm sorry, because you are missing some of the best, most doughy and delightful pizza you could ever imagine.

Add in my cute boyfriend and you pretty much have perfection.  Well... and cake.  Obviously.

But I wanted to make a quick post because I had some seriously deep thoughts in my run today, kids.  It was like a philosophy class in my noggin.  What happened (and this will explain my slower pace) is that I have decided to officially adopt the Jeff Galloway run-walk-run method.  I think part of the reason that I have been stressing about running, and why I ditched my run on Tuesday completely, is because I am intimidated by running long periods of time without stopping.  I know it's silly because I've done it before, when I was heavier and more out of shape, but what I realized in the middle of my run was that thinking is actually the problem, not the long periods of running!

Okay, I'm not sure that made sense.  Let's try this again.  I realized today that yes, I am intimidated by running longer periods of time without stopping.  Part of the reason I love Couch to 5K is that it works in intervals - run for a set period of time, then walk for a set period of time, and repeat.  But now, it's late enough in the program that I'm supposed to be running for 25 straight minutes.  While it isn't too terribly long, I know that I get bored and winded and cranky if I run that long because I insist on pushing myself.  So why not just add walking intervals and be done with it?  Because I sit there and think "Jessica, you're dumb, you've run 25 minutes straight before.  You've run much longer than that before!  Why are you being such a baby about it?"  Um, excuse me, voices-in-my-head... but that's mean.

And that's when it hit me.  It IS mean, and I would never speak that way to anyone else, so why am I doing it to myself?  Isn't my running supposed to be about me, and for me?  Let's face facts here, kids, I get excited when I can maintain an 11 minute mile.  I ain't winning any races anytime soon, unless nobody else shows up.  And that's completely okay.  I came to terms with the fact that I am not destined to be a marathon winner a long time ago.  But for some reason, I let that affect my self image.  The truth is, I don't want to run a million marathons and win them all!  Even if I felt like my body could withstand that, it would mean a lot more training than I want to do.  I don't even like running every day... I like running every other day and shaking my groove thang with Chalene on my off days.  But does that make me less of a runner?  I used to think it did, but I'm over that mentality.

So, my big realization of the day?

I am a runner!

Okay, so maybe it wasn't that philosophical of a discussion going on up there.  But like I said in my "speak da troof" about body image... I'm working on it, and that's the best any of us can do.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to be a good date and wash the sunscreen and dirt off my face before I shove pizza into it.

Today's blog post brought to you by the first time I've washed my hair in a week!

I didn't say it was pretty... just that it was clean.  And yes, that is the best title I could come up with.

Today's run:
Couch to 5K Week Six, Day Three (extended edition!)
2.94 miles/41:10

I went on an exciting adventure today... I went for a trail run!  Yeehaw!  I decided that since I was seeing today as a fresh start and a clean slate, that I ought to do something to commemorate the occasion.  Plus, I wanted to see if running on some nice dirt would be a little more kind to my joints... the jury is still out on that one since my knees and right ankle are not thrilled right now.  I also ended up going a little further accidentally, but it was great because I almost got to 3.1 miles, so I've got some idea now of a realistic time goal to try for when I run a 5K again!  All of that aside... it was kind of a tough run (there seems to be a trend developing here...) and I admit that I didn't follow the plan for the day exactly. According to the Couch to 5K program, today was: "Brisk five-minute warmup walk, then jog 2-1/4 miles (or 25 minutes) with no walking."  Yeeeeeah... about that.  The body said no.

I just started reading Jeff Galloway's Half-Marathon: You Can Do It last night and he swears by his "run-walk-run" method, where you take planned walk breaks during your runs.  He has recommended running and walking splits based on pace, and according to what I am tending to run these days, he recommends running for three minutes and then walking for one.  So when I started to get tired and unhappy in my run today, I just started taking walk breaks.  Sometimes I followed the intervals that he suggested, and sometimes I just went with how I felt.  It may have been "breaking the rules" of the Couch to 5K program, but I have to admit that it honestly felt freeing.  I was giving myself permission to do what I needed to do for my body regardless of the program.  And I think the run-walk-run method is really going to work for me, so I'm planning on incorporating it into my training.  Galloway swears that you can get all the endurance benefits of your runs and cut your chances of injury by including walk breaks... and he's pretty good at this whole running thang, so I'll take his advice.

Highly recommend!  It's also the only reading material I have the brainpower for right now.  Well... that and my old Nate the Great books.  Did anybody else read Nate the Great?  Totally off topic, but they were kind of the bomb.  Any boy who loves pancakes is my kind of boy.

In other news, my fabulous package from Mission Skincare arrived a few days ago, and since the sun decided to grace us with its presence today, I actually got to put it to good use!  I tried the Rejuvenating Face Moisturizer Lotion with SPF 30 pre-run, and post-run, I used the Refreshing Foot Therapy Cream. So far I'm really enjoying the Mission products.  I love that they are cruelty free, and they really are good products.  I'm picky about face sunscreen, but I'm also super protective of my skin, so I use sunscreen every day.  This one was great and didn't smell all sunscreen-y.  The foot cream also smelled really lovely - I'm not sure if it "protected, revived, and refreshed" my feet as promised, but it smelled nice and rubbing it into my sore feet immediately after my run did feel pretty great!  Now I just have to rope D-Money into doing it for me when he visits this week...

Really, I just like bringing David up so I can show off all the adorable pictures of us in Disney.  Do you like how we're in two different climates here?  I need a lot of layers to hang out with this boy.

I would recommend the Mission line to anyone who has thought about it - I am really impressed so far, and the prices are reasonable for good quality skin and sun care.  Plus, they donate quite a bit to charity, so your money is going to good use.  That being said, I may do a wee little Mission giveaway if I can hit double digits of my followers!  And yes, that is a shameless attempt at getting more people to read my blog.  Forgive me.  I was in marching band in high school, I need to be popular someday.

In other news, I weighed in for the first time in two weeks this morning... oh boy.  Apparently when I fell off the wagon, I also ate one of the horses driving it, because I managed to gain four pounds.  In case you're wondering, yes, that does put me well over my goal weight and unless I can get that weight off in the next two weeks, yes, that does put my job in jeopardy.  Fiiiiiine.  I'm back to tracking my points and eating my vegetables.  And I'll hide my new friends...

... hide them in my BELLY!  HA!

Why am I wearing fleece in May?!

Ahem.  I swear I got off my couch and out of my sweatpants this week.  But my laptop is so heavy, blogging was impossible.  Okay... so I'm lazy.  Here.  Evidence.

Tuesday's run:
Couch to 5K Week Six, Day One
2.39 miles/33:16

Tuesday's Turbo Fire workout:
HIIT 20
178 calories/21:03

Today's run:
Couch to 5K Week Six, Day Two
2.41 miles/31:53

Okay, you say.  You've been working out.  Congratulations, you're not the laziest human ever.  Buuuuut... have you washed your hair?

Unimportant detail.

What can I say about my runs this week?  Well, for starters, they've been REALLY FREAKING COLD!  Someone forgot to inform Colorado that it's May, and that while it's allowed to be a total jerk during the winter with snow and single digit temperatures, it is supposed to be nice by summer.  But is it?  No.  When I went out for my run today, not only was it grey, dreary, and misting (no pictures of today's run because all you would have seen was frizz), but it was 41 degrees outside.  Um.  Last I checked, 41 was not enough degrees.  Especially since it was almost noon.

That being said, both runs were actually pretty good.  On Tuesday, I backed off on my pace because I was feeling pretty sore from Fire 55 Not-So-EZ on Monday.  I was not exactly speedy today either, and my legs were just unhappy.  I think part of it is the weather... I've been a little down in the dumps because of the lack of sunshine, and I think it's starting to affect me physically.  But supposedly the sun will make a triumphant return on Saturday, so fingers crossed!

Today's run was actually really good for me mentally.  All morning, I was making every excuse I could to not go out... I spent a good 20 minutes whining about how I didn't want to ruin my iPod by taking it out in the rain and I could not bear to run without music!  The humanity!  But I finally decided to suck it up and just go.  Here is where I really want to tell you that it was a fabulous run and I did seven minute miles and the heavens smiled upon me.  But they keep telling me that lying is a sin.  Really, it was a hard run - my legs felt heavy and sore only a few minutes in and the misty rain combined with a cold wind made for icy hands and ears (insert rant about how regretting running without gloves in May is ABSURD).

I got through the run because of two mantras... the first was "You are stronger than the elements."  This really helped when the wind nearly blew off my earbuds and my ears started tingling.  At one point during my run, at the top of a bridge, I actually threw both arms up in the hair and yelled "I am stronger than the elements!"  Well, yelled might be an exaggeration since I was wheezing at the time.  But I digress.  The second was a Chalene line from Turbo Fire that I've actually been using as a mantra for a few days now: "Guess what?  You're not tired!"  She says this a lot in Turbo Fire.  She also will say "You're not tired - you are getting your second wind," which I used a few times today as well.  Chalene is big on the idea that you will believe anything you tell yourself.  This is something I am constantly working on, but even if telling myself that I'm not tired doesn't always do the trick, hearing her positive voice in my head does help.  She's my new bestie.  I might stalk her.

Okay, this post has been way too much talk and not enough awkward pictures.  I promise that will change tomorrow, and I promise that I will actually update tomorrow for a fun new change!  Until then, I will sit quietly and devour my newfound love...

... ironically enough, I lead my very first Weight Watchers meeting tomorrow morning.  I will not be mentioning them, even though the topic is breakfast, and these are clearly the breakfast of champions.

Don't judge me.

I really love my Garmin.

Today's run:
Couch to 5K Week Five, Day Three
2.3 miles/29:03

I'm still working on getting all caught up on my runs and workouts for the past week, but diving back in anyway.  Today's run went really well, which was kind of surprising given the circumstances.  See, someone forgot to tell the state of Colorado that it's MAY and SUMMER and that it should be WARM.  Colorado is apparently under the impression that it is still FEBRUARY and WINTER and that it should be FREEZE-YOUR-TOOKUS-OFF-COLD.  Right before I got out of my car to go on my run (and yes, I drive to a gloriously flat path for my runs now instead of wheezing up the hills of my neighborhood), I checked my phone to see the temperature.  It said 39 degrees.  Read it again, and recognize that it is May 15th, kids: 39 degrees and foggy, with misty rain.  Um.  Yeah.  Let's just say it wasn't the most comfortable running weather of all time.  It did make for some gorgeous pictures though...

Baby geese!  I got to this little park right at the end of my run - this was a nice surprise.

The bitter goose in the forefront was not a nice surprise - he tried to attack me for taking pictures.  I hereby dub him Britney Spears.

Despite the cold weather and the fact that I spaced bringing water or Cytomax with me on the run (never again will I run without Cytomax - it is my homeslice), I was so insanely proud of this run.  For today's run, following the Couch to 5K plan, I did a 5 minute warm up and a 5 minute cool down with a 20 minute solid run between.  YEAH BABY!  I was a little nervous, mostly because as much as I hate to admit it, I sometimes get bored with running.  But it went really well!  And I'm thrilled with my pace - in the 20 minutes, I ran about 1.8 miles, which means I am getting dangerously close to running a 10 minute mile and it doesn't feel super hard!  That is crazy awesome to me, and I'm so excited to keep working on my speed.

Now... I admit I have a confession to make.  Don't tell David, but there's a new relationship in my life, one that has gotten very serious and physically intimate so quickly I barely even realized it was happening.  The truth is... we went to bed together... and I just had to tell someone...

... I wish I was kidding.

Shockingly, when I couldn't find my Garmin for my run on Friday, I never thought to myself, "I wonder if it's tangled up in my bed?"  Yup, that's right everyone... I slept with my Garmin for several nights.  It's love, it's real and it's deep.

Poor David, the jealousy must be killing him.  That's his blanket that the Garmin has been lounging in after each sweaty rendezvous.  Shameful.

In other news having nothing to do with my new GPS lovaaah, I've decided to have a little "do over" and restart Turbo Fire tomorrow.  I realized today that I'd done almost two weeks of Turbo Fire workouts along with my running and honestly, I hadn't noticed a single change in my body.  But then, I also realized that I hadn't actually taken before pictures or measurements so I really had no accurate way of knowing if there had been changes.  Oops.  So I'm starting over tomorrow and taking my before pictures and my before measurements like a good little Beachbody addict.  I'm also going to follow the 5 Day Inferno Plan that says I can "get hot for the weekend."  Yowza.  I'm not exactly 100% on what that means, but hey, I'll play.  I'm even following the nutrition plan for the five days, and went grocery shopping today for everything I'll need.  It's going to be a little rough because it combines long Turbo Fire workouts every day with a 1,200 calorie diet, but we'll see!  Depending on how terrifyingly pale I look in the before pictures, I might post them tomorrow.  Avert your eyes now.

And... just in case you've been looking at too many of the pictures in this blog...

I really do own makeup.  And a hairbrush.  And jewelry.  I mean, it's just that one necklace, but that's enough, right?

Cytomax for the win.

Today's run:
Couch to 5K Week Four, Day Three
2.26 miles/31:07

Today's Turbo Fire workout:
Fire 30
44:55

My run today was AWESOME.  No kidding, best run I've had in a very long time.  But I'll get back to that.

Really, my whole day was pretty great.  I went to my Weight Watchers meeting this morning - even though I'm in maintenance now, and I work for the company and get the information directly from them, I really like going to the meeting that I lost weight at.  It helps keep me accountable and it's something that I really enjoy as "me" time.  Plus, it gives me an excuse to check out the amazing farmer's market in Boulder.  And by that I mean, enjoy the breakfast of champions:

These dumplings are incredible.  A Saturday morning summer tradition for me.

Then I went off to a local running store in search of cross trainers... Turbo Fire is very high impact and while I don't want to use my current running shoes for it, I can't really wear my beaten down ones either and except to still have knees when I'm done.  It was nice to go to this store though, since it is where I had my gait analyzed and was fitted for my first pair of running shoes for my first round of Couch to 5K - it brought back good memories.  While I was there, I found a fabulous top that I fell in love with (not so much in love with the price tag), and the perfect shorts for my Home Run for the Homeless 5K tomorrow...

HAHAHAHAHA!

Luckily for you (or unluckily, depending on your point of view), I have a sense of humor...

These things are terrifyingly short.  For your sake, don't zoom in on the cellulite.

I should be on America's Next Top Model.  But not for hand modeling, clearly.  For manly calf modeling.

Inspired by seeing that much leg in the morning, I came home determined to run, even if it was a little toasty outside.

I decided to drive to a nice flat path only a few minutes from my house because the hills in my neighborhood have just been awful for me lately, and while part of me says suck it up and get through them, the other part of me thinks I'm setting myself up for failure.  So we went flat today, and I think it made all the difference in the world.  And in case it sounds like I'm just whining about tiny hills... today, according to my Garmin, I had an elevation gain of 79 feet and an elevation loss of 81 feet.  Tuesday?  Elevation gain of 205 feet, elevation loss of 202.  Gross.

I also got a chance to try two new things today: Cytomax in Cool Citrus and this gem:

Now I know 2 miles really isn't that long to go without water, but it's getting hot out, and I want to get used to having water with me for long runs.  And I did pretty much polish off those 22 ounces easily. I put the Cytomax in that bottle and drank it during the run, and I swear it made a huge difference.  I didn't feel like I worked as hard, yet I burned more calories than I have in my recent runs, and at the end of the workout, even though I pushed hard through the last interval, I felt like I could have kept running.  I haven't felt like that in several runs, so I'm sold.  Cytomax is my new friend.

I also made another new friend on my run, which let's be honest, is part of why it was so awesome.  I wish I'd gotten a picture of my new friend, but it was a soaking wet chocolate Labrador who bounded towards me every time he saw me.  Which was twice.  Really - bounded.  Dragging his owner along behind him.  His owner said that he never reacts to people like this, but he really seemed to like me.  I said he obviously knew that I loved chocolate Labs.  Which I do.

Come on, how could you resist this face?!

I got home, had some lunch, and then threw myself right into Turbo Fire.  Of the three I've done so far, Fire 30 is definitely my favorite.  It's full of really fun combos, and it's a good length of time - the hour long class I did yesterday was awfully long for high intensity and high impact work.  But today's was great.  It made me sweat more than Lindsay Lohan in court.

Awkward "check out my sweaty collarbone" face.  Hot.

You really should see how badly matched I was today, though, it's splendid.  There is a reason that I mostly work out in the privacy of my own home.

The top = deep purple.  The shorts = black with orange stripes on the side.  The shoes = turquoise.  The face = inexcusable.

Somebody is going to nominate me for What Not To Wear if I keep posting things like this.  That picture also shows the cross trainers that I bought today... and that I will be taking back sometime this week.  Sad day.  I liked them okay in the store - if I was being completely honest, I'd say that I mostly bought them out of desperation.  I have really struggled to find cross trainers in stores that I can try on, versus buying them blindly online based on reviews.  I looked at Dick's, and they really only had Nike, which I've never had great luck with.  These were Asics, and since I like their running shoes, and since the woman who showed them to me assured me that they would provide great lateral stability and support for high impact movement, I trusted them.  Mistake.  Apparently "great lateral stability" and "support for high impact movement" means shaky ankles and sore soles 5 minutes into the workout.  Now accepting any and all suggestions for good cross trainers!
