Speak da Troof: Body image issues.

I hope Skinny Runner can forgive me for borrowing "Speak da Troof" (okay, stealing, but she's my idol) - her "I haz fat days" post from a little while back really got to me because it's an issue I've been dealing with a lot lately.

In other words... instead of catching up on all the workouts and runs that I haven't posted this week like any good fitness blogger would do... I'm going to change the subject!  I swear I'll catch up soon.

So, da troof:
Reading the "I haz fat days" was kind of an eye opener to me - not only do I see the gorgeous lady behind Skinny Runner as my running idol, but let's be honest, she's a knockout.  I kind of ignorantly and rudely assumed that she never had a bad body day in her life.  And while I wouldn't wish feeling bad about yourself on anyone (I've done plenty of it and I know it sucks), it's sometimes nice to know that body image issues aren't just reserved for those of us who have fat skeletons in their closets.

Another unfortunate troof:
What they don't tell you when you lose weight is that it's never really over.  It's kind of this awful realization that nobody wants to talk about.  This is not to say that your weight loss is never over - please, when you hit a healthy and happy weight, stop losing!  But the struggles with weight never end.  I assumed that when I hit my goal weight last year and became a lifetime member with Weight Watchers that that was it, I was done.  And for a while, it really seemed like that could be true - I was working full time at a job that constantly had me on my feet and moving around, so I was burning a ton of calories without noticing.  I turned into one of those people I'd always been jealous of who could eat pretty much anything, exercise randomly, and still easily maintain their weight.  Then, in the span of about a month, that fell apart and I gained about 7 pounds.  It wasn't much, but it was enough to make me feel uncomfortable in my skin again... and make my favorite jeans impossible to wear.

Now is when I would love to tell you that since I had already successfully lost much more weight, it was no problem at all for me to drop those 7 pounds.  But it's been a serious problem - a problem that has been gnawing at me for a few months now.  Because of that, I've been struggling a lot with my own body image lately, especially with the new pressures of working for Weight Watchers.  I'm still within my goal range for the company, so my job isn't at risk, but it's hard to spend so much time every week telling other people how to reach their goal weight and saying "You can do it!" when I feel like I can't.

Running, and fitness in general, has helped me a lot with my body image, because it reminds me of what my body can do regardless of what it looks like.  I went on a great run today and I wasn't thinking about how big my thighs looked in my running tights - I was thinking about how great it felt to be running outside in the sunshine!  But do I get self conscious about how my thighs look?  HELL YES I DO.  It's one of those battles that I think I will always be fighting... and I would love to say that I'm an expert on it, but I'm not.  I'm trying though, and working on it, and that's the best we can do.

It's funny, really, how our body image and self confidence ebbs and flows.  Today I looked in the mirror and hated what I saw.  My stomach looked pudgy, my arms looked flabby... I wasn't happy with my body at all.  And yet, when I look at this picture:

I am completely amazed at how far I've come.  Before Weight Watchers, I would never have tried on those shorts, let alone taken photographic evidence.  And while I joke about how manly my calves are - look at that muscle!  A lot of hard work went into that calf, and I love it, even if I sometimes wish I could do a leg transplant with Julianne Hough.

Da troof really is that I don't know the solution for body image issues.  I'm still learning - I think we all are.  But sometimes it just helps to know you're not alone.  I'm blessed to have family and friends that support me and tell me how great I look, and a boyfriend who thinks I'm gorgeous even when I can't stand the sight of myself.  At the end of the day, despite how much I will my thighs to shrink, I am loved and lucky.  And my thighs?

Well, I guess they're okay.

FIRST RACE OF 2011 COMPLETED!

Okay, so... just pretend that I actually posted this on Sunday.  I'm playing a massive game of catch up here, and with Blogger down all of yesterday... wellllll... just work with me, kids.

One of my goals for the year is to complete 11 races in 2011.  In order to note regret this goal and end up punching myself in the face, I'm leaving it as simple as that - the races can be walking or running, and any distance.  So with that in mind, i am now one step closer to completing that goal because I finished my first race of 2011!  Huzzah!

On Sunday, May 8th, my mom wanted to do the Colorado Rockies Home Run for the Homeless to celebrate Mother's Day.  It's a 5K race starting right at the front of Coors Field where the Rockies play, going through part of downtown Denver, and finishing with a lap around the warning track on the field.  We did the same race in 2009 together, as my first race after joining Weight Watchers and starting Couch to 5K the first time, so I thought it would be a great first race of the year.

My mom and I walked it together, and according to my Garmin, we finished in 52:49.  Our average moving pace was a 15:46 min/mi and our best pace was a 9:23 min/mi, which pretty much thrilled my mom to no end, much like my response to my 7ish min/mi.  She is now almost as big a fan of my Garmin as I am.

And now... without futher ado... I present to you a photographic journey through the Home Run for the Homeless.  Also known as "Jessica Taking Lots of Pictures to Forget About How Much Her Feet Hurt."

Pre-race!

It was a pretty good crowd this year - it's nice to see a good turnout for a charity race.

It took us about 10 minutes to get here after the official start of the race... hence why I am using the time from my Garmin instead of the official time from the racing chip.

Why yes, there is a grown man in a jester hat yelling into a megaphone at mile one...  Why?  I couldn't begin to tell you.

No jester at mile two, just Porta-Potties.  What a letdown.

Headed into the field!

A view from right behind home plate.

Where my beloved Dexter Fowler relaxes between plays... sigh...

Looking like a goof on the warning track.  Those pants are more purple in person - trying to show off my Rockies pride.  Instead, I think I just showed off my thunder thighs.  But I digress.

Post-race!

I really enjoyed this race - it's a good course, not super hilly, and with really nice views.  There was water on the course once I believe, which for fish-girl here is not quite enough, but since the weather was pretty balmy, it was not a huge deal.  I made the decision to take my new Mizuno Wave Inspire 7s out as a "breaking them in" adventure... this was a horrible choice.  The Asics, as I realized, are a lot more cushiony, and so by comparison, I felt like I had very little support in the Mizunos.  I think I'm going to try getting insoles or inserts of some sort and hoping that helps.  These shoes have been good to me for several years, so I'd be sad if they didn't work for me anymore - especially since the Asics I've now fallen in love with are discontinued.  Silly Nordstrom Rack getting me to fall in love with things that don't exist anymore!

But I digress... I would definitely do this race again next year.  The after party was pretty wonderful - free hot dogs!  Free Diet Coke!  Free beer... which I didn't take advantage of because it wasn't even quite 10 am yet, and even I have limits.  If they'd been handing out cake, different story.  I did partake of a hot dog, and it was delightful!  Plus, for the entry fee, you get a t-shirt, all the after party nonsense, and two free tickets to a Rockies game.  And it supports a great cause, which I really appreciate.  Charity runs are my favorite.

Now... back to playing catch up.  Whew!

AHHHHHHH!

Why am I writing about crazy eyes?!!  I have a new follower and I DON'T KNOW HER PERSONALLY!  I can't screw it up by actually proving that I'm insane.  Pretend that didn't happen.

Dear new follower Lisa,
You rock and made my whole night better!
Jessica

P.S. - I'm only kind of crazy, I promise.  Please don't run screaming.  Thank you.

Crazy eyes.

I have missed several days of blogging now, and the only excuse I can think of that makes sense is too much of this...

Yup.  Crazy eyes.  For the last three days, I've been 18 kinds of nuts.  Emotional rollercoasters, severe overreactions, and a whole bundle of stress (and stress eating - lovely).

If I keep up the eating habits that I adopted today, my position on the Crazy/Hot Scale will be seriously jeopardized.  Sorry, Barney.

Hopefully when I wake up tomorrow, I'm a normal person and can resume normal person activities.  If not, I can continue to binge eat and buy tons of fitness gear online because that seems to be working so far... right?  Right?!!

Cytomax for the win.

Today's run:
Couch to 5K Week Four, Day Three
2.26 miles/31:07

Today's Turbo Fire workout:
Fire 30
44:55

My run today was AWESOME.  No kidding, best run I've had in a very long time.  But I'll get back to that.

Really, my whole day was pretty great.  I went to my Weight Watchers meeting this morning - even though I'm in maintenance now, and I work for the company and get the information directly from them, I really like going to the meeting that I lost weight at.  It helps keep me accountable and it's something that I really enjoy as "me" time.  Plus, it gives me an excuse to check out the amazing farmer's market in Boulder.  And by that I mean, enjoy the breakfast of champions:

These dumplings are incredible.  A Saturday morning summer tradition for me.

Then I went off to a local running store in search of cross trainers... Turbo Fire is very high impact and while I don't want to use my current running shoes for it, I can't really wear my beaten down ones either and except to still have knees when I'm done.  It was nice to go to this store though, since it is where I had my gait analyzed and was fitted for my first pair of running shoes for my first round of Couch to 5K - it brought back good memories.  While I was there, I found a fabulous top that I fell in love with (not so much in love with the price tag), and the perfect shorts for my Home Run for the Homeless 5K tomorrow...

HAHAHAHAHA!

Luckily for you (or unluckily, depending on your point of view), I have a sense of humor...

These things are terrifyingly short.  For your sake, don't zoom in on the cellulite.

I should be on America's Next Top Model.  But not for hand modeling, clearly.  For manly calf modeling.

Inspired by seeing that much leg in the morning, I came home determined to run, even if it was a little toasty outside.

I decided to drive to a nice flat path only a few minutes from my house because the hills in my neighborhood have just been awful for me lately, and while part of me says suck it up and get through them, the other part of me thinks I'm setting myself up for failure.  So we went flat today, and I think it made all the difference in the world.  And in case it sounds like I'm just whining about tiny hills... today, according to my Garmin, I had an elevation gain of 79 feet and an elevation loss of 81 feet.  Tuesday?  Elevation gain of 205 feet, elevation loss of 202.  Gross.

I also got a chance to try two new things today: Cytomax in Cool Citrus and this gem:

Now I know 2 miles really isn't that long to go without water, but it's getting hot out, and I want to get used to having water with me for long runs.  And I did pretty much polish off those 22 ounces easily. I put the Cytomax in that bottle and drank it during the run, and I swear it made a huge difference.  I didn't feel like I worked as hard, yet I burned more calories than I have in my recent runs, and at the end of the workout, even though I pushed hard through the last interval, I felt like I could have kept running.  I haven't felt like that in several runs, so I'm sold.  Cytomax is my new friend.

I also made another new friend on my run, which let's be honest, is part of why it was so awesome.  I wish I'd gotten a picture of my new friend, but it was a soaking wet chocolate Labrador who bounded towards me every time he saw me.  Which was twice.  Really - bounded.  Dragging his owner along behind him.  His owner said that he never reacts to people like this, but he really seemed to like me.  I said he obviously knew that I loved chocolate Labs.  Which I do.

Come on, how could you resist this face?!

I got home, had some lunch, and then threw myself right into Turbo Fire.  Of the three I've done so far, Fire 30 is definitely my favorite.  It's full of really fun combos, and it's a good length of time - the hour long class I did yesterday was awfully long for high intensity and high impact work.  But today's was great.  It made me sweat more than Lindsay Lohan in court.

Awkward "check out my sweaty collarbone" face.  Hot.

You really should see how badly matched I was today, though, it's splendid.  There is a reason that I mostly work out in the privacy of my own home.

The top = deep purple.  The shorts = black with orange stripes on the side.  The shoes = turquoise.  The face = inexcusable.

Somebody is going to nominate me for What Not To Wear if I keep posting things like this.  That picture also shows the cross trainers that I bought today... and that I will be taking back sometime this week.  Sad day.  I liked them okay in the store - if I was being completely honest, I'd say that I mostly bought them out of desperation.  I have really struggled to find cross trainers in stores that I can try on, versus buying them blindly online based on reviews.  I looked at Dick's, and they really only had Nike, which I've never had great luck with.  These were Asics, and since I like their running shoes, and since the woman who showed them to me assured me that they would provide great lateral stability and support for high impact movement, I trusted them.  Mistake.  Apparently "great lateral stability" and "support for high impact movement" means shaky ankles and sore soles 5 minutes into the workout.  Now accepting any and all suggestions for good cross trainers!

Recovery drink fail.

Today's Turbo Fire workout:
Fire 55 EZ
1:12:35

First of all, the idea of this as "EZ" is laughable.  Let's clear that up right now.  I again did the "New to Class" version where Chalene breaks down the moves, which was relatively essential in this workout because the combos were ridiculous.  And never ending.  Another reason why it was not easy.  Mainly it wasn't easy because it's an hour of nonstop crazy.  In just over an hour (including stretch), I burned 667 calories.  Seriously?!  No complaints here, really.  Means more food for me.

And speaking of food... or things that pretend to be food... I had my first adventure with a real grown-up recovery drink today!  On Tuesday, I posted that I'd ordered Fluid Recovery Drink (in Chocolate Wave because if I'm using 3 PointsPlus values on something, it better be chocolate).  In shocking news to everyone, however, I got impatient.  And it turns out that a store nearby carries the stuff.  So I went down there fat, dumb, and happy to get some single serving packets of Fluid in the two other flavors, Berry Treasure and Tropical Escape, so that I could try them post Turbo Fire.  I decided on Berry Treasure as today's adventure.

Here is how I looked and felt post-workout and pre-recovery drink (only not fuzzy, thanks iPhone, you're a jerk)...

And here is how I looked and felt after a few sips...

I'm sad because of all the things I've lost in my triple chins.

I'm relatively concerned about all the people who reviewed it because they must not have taste buds.  Someone should notify them immediately.  But really... all kidding aside, this stuff was DISGUSTING. I couldn't even finish it.  I made it exactly as instructed, using about 16 ounces of water, and I probably made it through half.  Maybe.  It smelled weird, it tasted gross... it really was the whole package.  Actually, at one point, I considered that maybe the package would taste better...

It did, actually.

So now I'm feeling a little dumb for buying a whole container of it without trying it first.  I'm hoping (fingers crossed) that I'm just not a fan of Berry Treasure, and that Tropical Escape and Chocolate Wave might be better.  I'm planning on trying Tropical Escape tomorrow if I can bear it, and Chocolate Wave should be here Monday.  If all else fails, it looks like I'm back to fruit smoothies and chocolate milk... there are worse fates in the world.

Speaking of food (again), I have two new addictions.  The first is an obsession with putting whipped cream on everything.  This is starting to really get out of hand.  But see for yourselves here.

I know the correct response to seeing this bowl of delightful mixed berries should be "Oh, yum!  Mixed berries!"  But doesn't it look so much better...

Now?!!!

Really, this is getting out of hand.  I bought the jumbo can of Reddi-Whip tonight because I have been running through the regular cans too quickly.

The other new addiction is... wait for it... No Pudge Brownies.

I'm relatively sure I'm the last Weight Watchers member ever to try these, but I'm so glad I did.  They are delightful!  The exact opposite of Fluid Berry Treasure - these completely made up for that mishap.  I made them with Fage 0% plain yogurt, a teaspoon of vanilla extract, and a little bit of egg whites just to make the batter less powdery.  I'm madly in love.  Sorry David...

Someday he will probably kill me for the pictures that I use in this blog.

But he's used to things like this.  I once left him for a buttermilk biscuit.  It's not a moment I'm particularly proud of... but it was a really good biscuit, kids.

Now my food baby and I will go to sleep.  Hopefully I don't go into labor in the night... I'm too tired for that nonsense.

Tiny victory!

Today's run:
Couch to 5K Week Four, Day Two
2.26 miles/30:58

This is an ode to the greatness of the Garmin Forerunner 305 and why it made my day.

Look at that composition - the running shoe carefully placed alongside the Garmin.  I clearly paid attention in Art History classes.  And look where it got me.

Please note that I ran farther in less time than my run on Tuesday!  More specifically... I ran 0.07 of a mile farther in 46 seconds less time.  Okay, so I'm not winning the IronMan or challenging Caroline Kilel to a competition anytime soon, but even the little victories count, right?  Right?

And speaking of little run-related victories today...

No, the victory is not that I somehow managed to take an even more awkward self portrait than usual.

It's THIS!

See that backwards number in the top left corner of the Garmin?  When you're not looking at it through Photo Booth and next to my crazy eyes, it says 07:52.  And that, my friends, was the best pace of my run today.  Read it again: 7:52.  That's a sub-8-minute-mile, kids!

Now, my logical mind scoffs and says that the Garmin is adorable, but faulty, and that must be inaccurate.  But even if I was running at that pace for just a second or two, seeing that number gives me such hope!  This is big news - I could someday run an 8 minute mile!  Of course, it would be just one mile, and they'd have to scrape me off the pavement and onto a stretcher at the end of that mile... but I could do it!

In related news... I am seriously considering registering for the Georgetown to Idaho Springs Half Marathon as my very first.

The only serious problem is that the race is August 13th, which means if I finish out all 9 weeks of Couch to 5K, I only have 9 more weeks to get from running about 3 miles at a time to being able to run 13.1 miles.  And the training plan I was going to use (Hal Higdon's Novice Plan) requires 12 weeks.  So I will have to think on it.  But from what I understand it is a gorgeous and fast race... I could go for fast for my first half!

Besides, registration for it isn't too expensive even on race day if I can't make up my mind.  Which is good because I need to save all the money I can for this gem in 2012...
